Computer Numerical Control (CNC)
CNC (Computer Numerical Control) is an automated control system
used in manufacturing machines such as mills, lathes, routers, and
grinders. It allows machines to operate with precision,
repeatability, and minimal manual intervention by following
pre-programmed instructions (G-code & M-code).
How CNC Works :
-
1. Designing the Part
The operator creates a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model of
the part.
-
2. Generating the CNC Program
The CAD file is converted into CAM (Computer-Aided
Manufacturing) software, which generates G-code (machine
instructions).
- 3. Machine Setup
The workpiece is mounted, and the appropriate tools are loaded into
the machine.
- 4. Execution
The CNC controller reads the G-code and moves the machine along the
specified X, Y, and Z axes to cut, drill, or shape the material.
- 5. Quality Check
After machining, the part is inspected using CMM (Coordinate
Measuring Machines) or other measurement tools.
Types of CNC Machines
-
CNC Milling Machines (VMC, HMC) :
Used for cutting and drilling operations
-
CNC Lathes (Turning Centers) : Rotates the
workpiece for shaping with a stationary cutting tool.
-
CNC Routers : Used for cutting wood, plastics, and
soft metals.
-
CNC Plasma Cutters : Uses plasma to cut metal.
-
CNC Laser Cutters : Uses lasers for high-precision
cutting.
-
CNC EDM (Electrical Discharge Machines) : Uses
electrical sparks to cut hard materials.
Advantages of CNC
✅ High Precision & Accuracy :
Achieves micron-level tolerances.
✅ Repeatability :
Produces identical parts with minimal variation.
✅ Automation & Efficiency :
Reduces manual labor, increases production speed.
✅ Complex Geometry :
Can create intricate shapes that are difficult with manual machining.
✅ Reduced Waste :
Optimized material usage minimizes errors and waste.
